| 325 | Grace Gedge | As a member of the Green Party I am well aware of the damage that aviation can do, not only to the environment, but to the health and quality of life of those who are unfortunate enough to live near airports. The rise in cheap flights are a relatively recent phenonemon, and something that hasn't been properly thought out in the long run - ultimately the effect on our economy will be a negative one, as the revenue raised will be cancelled out by the cost of treating those made ill by the effects of aviation and the cost of coping with environmental problems. I am not suggesting that we should ban all flights, or deny people an affordable holiday, but rather that we should take a more measured approach to aviation. This would include avoiding unnecessary flights through using technology such as video-conferencing, taxing aviation in proportion to the damage it causes, and investing in affordable and reliable rail infrastructure, made available to all. |
