James Abbott | I am opposed to any further airport expansion and with Stansted being the nearest threat to where I live, the blatant hypocrisy of the Government is all too evident - on the one hand saying they care about climate change and sustainability, on the other proposing what could become the largest airport on Earth, devouring thousands of acres of countyside, hundreds of homes, listed buildings, woodland, etc. With just one more runway, jet flights to/from Stansted could quadruple over existing levels, causing huge noise pollution and sleep disturbance. There would also be tens of millions of car movements per year extra on the congested roads of Essex. And then there is the extra C02 - adding to the rising levels already happening in the atmosphere. All this for an airport which has grown largely on the activities of Ryanair, whose boss recently stated that before long 50% plus of Ryanair passengers would not need to pay for their tickets because the company could make money from car hire, hotel rooms and in-flight gambling. Not only do we need to stop the destructive expansion of airports, we need to see airlines joining the real world and at the very least pay taxes on fuel as other forms of transport do. |
