Below is the name and personal statement of opposition to airport expansion of everyone who has signed the pledge.

| 606 | Russet | I've given up flying and I hope to persuade others to do the same. The faster you travel, the more you miss en route - you see a lot more walking than cycling, for instance. So take your time: if you want to see the south of France, take a year out and see all there is to see on the way. If you need to get there quicker, 24 hours will see you from Manchester to Barcelona. (see http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en) Life is the journey, live it; don't kill it for others. Flying technology is inherently inefficient, what I call "suck and squirt". Forward motion is achieved by 'action and reaction' - the momentum of the air pushed backwards equals the momentum of the plane going forwards. As air is much lighter, it has to be pushed back faster. As kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the velocity, far more of the fuel's energy is used to push air backwards than to move the plane forwards. Unfortunately, ships are no better. In nature, this sort of technology is left to a few sea creatures wishing to escape predators; more successful are the fishes and birds who lever a large bulk of water or air backwards. In land transport, however, what's pushed back is the Earth - so heavy it's backward motion would be hard to measure. Just a small proportion of the World's population, we in developed countries, are flying. That's unsustainable enough. Wait till the rest of the population joins in! As for airports, since when has tarmac been photosynthetic, able to absorb the CO2 that the displaced vegetation could, and thus support natural and human life? |

I agree with the many others opposing this policy: the environmental scientists who warn of the severe impacts of air transport on global climate change and local air quality; the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, the Environmental Audit Committee, and the Sustainable Development Commission, which strongly oppose the expansion plans; the many independent organisations, transport experts and respected think-tanks, which make the case for reducing demand and promoting the potential of rail; the local residents defending their houses, lands, and communities. In the event that the Government chooses to ignore this widespread and well-informed opposition, and refuses to back away from its expansion policy, I will take personal action to block airport expansion and to prevent companies from supporting and funding it. " |
