Below is the name and personal statement of opposition to airport expansion of everyone who has signed the pledge.

This means that no airports should, for any reason, expand: and that alternatives to flying should be chosen by all, whenever and wherever possible. European rail networks, for instance, can often link cities far more effectively than air services, and often with comparable overall journey-times. My wife and I never think of an air journey if rail services will do the same job, even if they take slightly longer. |

I agree with the many others opposing this policy: the environmental scientists who warn of the severe impacts of air transport on global climate change and local air quality; the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, the Environmental Audit Committee, and the Sustainable Development Commission, which strongly oppose the expansion plans; the many independent organisations, transport experts and respected think-tanks, which make the case for reducing demand and promoting the potential of rail; the local residents defending their houses, lands, and communities. In the event that the Government chooses to ignore this widespread and well-informed opposition, and refuses to back away from its expansion policy, I will consider taking personal action to block airport expansion and to prevent companies from supporting and funding it. |

The increased cost of air travel would curb its growth and remove the need for airport expansion. The extra revenue generated should be spent on renewable energy projects. |
