Dear Sirs, I find it hard to comprehend the decision to expand britain's airports at this time of environmental crisis. I could understand such a move in the fifties, but today we cannot afford to ignore our effect on the environment. Just walk down the street and smell how dirty the air is. More cheap holidays means more running away from our problems. But you don't solve a problem by making a bigger problem. If we don't face up to reality now, we're only giving ourselves more work to do later.

Surely humankind has done enough damage to the environment without taking yet more of it. Do people have to be dropping dead due to global warming before it registers that the only action there can be is action to protect and enhance the environment?

Not only do we need less air travel, it should also be a realisic price. All this low priced air travel is just encouraging people to fly more.

More noise, pollution. Houses move when planes take off. Empty bus running through village every 10 minutes.

With measures being brought in regarding global warming it seems incongruous that airports are expanding. Aviation fuel should be taxed – life cannot continue without major consequences.

Quite apart from the intolerable noise flying aircraft over a major city id an accident wanting to happen.

Airport expansion ruins lives, homes, farms, wildlife, communities, jobs and increases pollution from aviation fuel and noise.

Please ensure that the UK develops a 21st century train network perhaps using government funds if necessary.
