Environmental groups suggest direct action as legitimate way to halt airport expansion

7 October 2004, Local Transport Today

" The prospect of direct action being launched against the Government's airport expansion plans increased this week with the launch of a new campaign.

An alliance of environmental groups is calling on the public to pledge their support to resist the expansion plans.  Groups involved in the campaign are Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, People and Planet, Rising Tide, Transport 2000, as well as local groups opposed to individual airport expansion plans.

People will be asked to sign up to the pledge which states: "In the event that the Government chooses to ignore the widespread and well-informed opposition, and refuses to back away from its expansionist policy, I will take personal action to block airport expansion and to prevent companies from supporting and funding it."

The groups say "personal action" could be anything from setting up a local campaign to non-violent direct action. "
